We are incredibly proud to officially launch our 2020 Impact Report and to invite you to read through our achievements during A Year Like No Other.

2020 was a year of uncertainty for all of us, and the Mater Foundation had to quickly adapt to ensure that we could meet our Mission to ensure that The Mater Hospital is at the forefront of research and innovation and is a leader for healthcare in Ireland, even in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.

With commitment from our incredible supporters as well as our very dedicated staff, we were able to fund and deliver a number of projects that continue to make a life-saving difference to patients of the Mater Public Hospital.

Our 2020 Impact Report also features a number of patient stories which give a real insight into the impact that your donations make to our patients and their families.

We cannot begin to thank our supporters enough for their kindness and generosity in 2020. Their support has meant that the Mater Foundation has been able to provide the healthcare heroes of the Mater Public Hospital with the vital grants and equipment they need to provide world class care.

On Saturday the 6th of November, an incredible 500 brave men took to the icy cold waters of Skerries South Beach in nothing but a bow tie to raise vital funds to help diagnose cancer, and in particular, prostate cancer.
Those 500 men have made an invaluable difference to the lives of many across the country and we are beyond delighted to announce that they have collectively raised an astonishing €136,668.29.

Everyone at the Mater Foundation and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital are still in absolute awe of each and every one of these men and their commitment to advancing cancer care in Ireland. We cannot begin to thank them enough.

These funds will make a lifesaving difference for many and will allow for:

– Earlier identification of recurrent prostate cancer.
– Reduced scanning times, a typical scan will now take 10 minutes as opposed to 20 minutes currently.
– Improved access to all forms of cancer trials.
– Increased efficiencies leading to approximately 300 more patients per year accessing advanced F18 PSMA cancer imaging.

Approximately 1 in 7 men in Ireland will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and the funds raised by this event will enable staff at the Mater Public Hospital to identify the cancer in the first instance as well as recurring cases earlier than ever.

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to all of our donors and supporters of the event, including the Dickie Dip Committee, Fingal County Council and the whole community of Skerries who were incredibly accommodating and welcoming.

Today marks the beginning of Trustees Week 2021, a whole week dedicated to celebrating the invaluable work of Trustees in the Charity Sector.

The Mater Foundation Trustees have played a key role in the running of our organisation and without their expert knowledge and guidance, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve our incredible successes of the past year.

Their support and commitment to our vision has allowed The Mater Foundation to maintain clear focus on our short and long-term goals with all the necessary resources as well as ensuring that we can continue to meet our Mission to harness our supporters’ kindness and generosity and work together with our partners to continuously transform and improve patient care at The Mater Hospital.

We are also proud to say that with the input from our Trustees, that the Mater Foundation has again achieved Triple Locked status with the @CharitiesInstituteIreland which highlights our commitment to transparent reporting, good fundraising and governance.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to each of our Trustees for all that they have done for us and all that they continue to do from all of us at The Mater Foundation.

The Mater Foundation are delighted to have recently granted a combined €1.07 million in funding to support the equipping of the new Acute Medical Short Stay Unit, the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and the Respiratory Special Care unit on St Raphael’s Ward in the Mater Hospital.

The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit is a 6-bed unit will provide specialised acute care to stroke patients and others with neurological issues. The Acute Medical Short Stay Unit at Mater will transform the care patients receive, with reduced overcrowding, faster treatment times, and designated areas for older and more frail patients

All three of these areas will all play a major role in the months and years ahead as the staff at the Mater continue to provide world class care.

The Mater Foundation’s special edition newsletter has recently been shared with our supporters.

From funding vital medical equipment, to transforming cancer surgery, to supporting our frontline workers as they adopt and respond to Covid 19… we have had incredible support this year.
